Dental bridges are a solution for missing teeth to restore oral function and aesthetics

A key principle at our practice is listening, which is why we provide complementary, no pressure consultations with patients. By first listening to our patients’ concerns and desires, this allows us to properly create effective treatment plans that are suited to our patients’ individual needs.

Dental Bridges

  • What is a dental bridge?

A fixed dental bridge technique has been used with high success for many years to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Teeth on both sides of the space left by the missing tooth are prepared for a crown. Then a false tooth is joined to the crowns, and the entire bridge is cemented to the prepared teeth.

  • What is the cost of a dental bridge?

Generally the cost of a dental bridge is almost the same as a dental implant and is based on the number of teeth missing as well as on the type of material being used.

  • What are the alternatives to a bridge?

Dental implants, removable dentures, or in the case of teeth that need to be removed and replaced with a dental bridge, saving your natural teeth are all alternative treatment options.

  • Is the process painful?

  • How long can dental bridges last for?

Dental bridges can last for many years if they are cared for and cleaned daily. Maintaining your bridge properly will help make it last for up to between five to 15 years.

When is a dental bridge needed?

With today’s advancement in dentistry, dental bridges have become a secondary choice as a fixed replacement option.

In situations where a dental implant cannot be placed to replace missing teeth, or if the patient does not want to undergo a surgery, dental bridges are a good alternative.

What are the advantages of a dental bridge?

  1. No surgery required
  2. No months of healing time like dental implants
  3. Fixed option unlike dentures which is a removable appliance
  4. A good option in medically compromised patient on whom dental implants cannot be placed
  5. A good option in case the bone dimensions are not favourable for dental implants

What are the disadvantages of a dental bridge?

The tooth either side of the missing space will have to be ground down, this may lead to potential damage to the nerve of these teeth further requiring treatment.

Inability to floss teeth, but there are alternative cleaning methods.

Generally needs strong teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

Types of dental bridges:

Traditional dental bridge

The traditional bridge involves an artificial tooth or teeth being held in place by dental crowns that are cemented to the abutment teeth (adjacent teeth). This is a popular choice if the patient has healthy adjacent teeth.

Cantilever dental bridge

Similar to the traditional bridge, the cantilever bridge is held in place by a dental crown. However, there is only one dental crown supporting the bridge. To have the cantilever bridge, you only need one adjacent healthy tooth.

Maryland dental bridge

The Maryland dental bridge uses two abutment teeth, just like the traditional bridge. However, the Maryland bridge does not use crowns, instead, it uses a metal or porcelain framework which is attached to the backside of the adjacent teeth.

This bridge can be used if there is a healthy tooth on both adjacent sides.
