Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

  • What is snoring and sleep apnoea?

A lot of people suffer from snoring activity in their sleep. While some of these people are simple snorers, a lot of people may have a serious sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnoea. Understanding the difference between sleep apnoea and snoring is the first step to effective treatment. Healthy sleep is very important as we spend about a third of our lives sleeping and this helps in restoration and rejuvenation of the body. Sleep disordered breathing is an umbrella term that includes snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, central or mixed sleep apnoea and upper airway resistance syndrome.

  • What are the risks of sleep disordered breathing?

Obesity, increased risk of heart disease, elevated blood pressure, diabetes, tiredness and fatigue, daytime sleepiness, anxiety and depression, impaired work and academic productivity and reduced quality of life are the risks and potential side effects of sleep disordered breathing.

  • Does Sleep disordered breathing occur in children and adults?

Yes! Adult sleep disorders and paediatric(children’s) sleep disorders both occur. Paediatric sleep disorders are often due to enlarged adenoids and tonsils, smaller upper jaw, lack of space for the tongue, retruded jaw position, obesity and other causes. These can lead to behavioural problems in children as well as can cause clenching and grinding, impact cognitive function and your children’s growth, as well as have other issues. Adult sleep disorders are often linked to obesity, smaller jaws and jaw position as well as airway problems.

What do our trained dentists at Zen Dental Studio do to help with your snoring and sleep apnoea?

At Zen Dental Studio, our dentists take your general health very seriously. Diagnosis and management of the cause of the problem is the most important step towards effective treatment.

Every child suspected of an underlying problem is thoroughly screened with sleep questionnaires filled out by parents, sleep diaries, and a thorough assessment of their mouth, jaw and jaw muscles is carried out. Referrals may be made to have a special low dose CT scan of your airway, jaw and nasal passages. Diagnosis by an appropriately qualified health physician can then be carried out. A plan can then be made and carried out.

Treatment for children and young adolescents may involve orthodontic and orthopaedic appliances and for diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea in adults, a mandibular advancement splint can significantly improve quality of sleep.

What is the role for Zen Dental Studio’s dentists in treating sleep disordered breathing?

A dentist plays an immense role in helping with these conditions. We can identify potential problems and either treat or refer to the appropriate medical specialists for proper management. Diagnosed Obstructive sleep apnoea can often be improved with dental appliances called mandibular advancement splints. In children, early intervention orthodontic appliances may play a role in helping these conditions.

  • What other health experts are involved in this treatment?

Referrals may be needed to other medical experts such as ENT surgeons, Oral surgeons, Sleep physicians, your GP doctor, radiologists, orthodontists, myofunctional therapists, allergists or to other relevant health experts.

  • What are the other treatments for treating sleep disordered breathing?

Other treatments as prescribed by an appropriately trained health expert can involve surgery, nasal sprays, CPAP (positive airway pressure) machines, weight loss and exercise programs, and avoiding sleeping on one’s back.
