When was the last time you visited your dentist? Was it more than 6 months ago, was it so long ago you can’t remember?
If you haven’t visited the dentist in the past six months, you’re putting your dental health at risk.
It’s important to visit your dentist for a regular dental check-up and clean at least every six months, however, the timeframe may depend on individual circumstances.
Generally, if you have good oral health it’s recommended that you visit the dentist every six months, however, if you have ongoing oral health problems, your dentist will suggest that you visit more frequently.
Every patient has different dental needs, no patient is the same as the next.
Why are regular dental visits important
Dental visits are extremely important as it allows the dentist to perform an oral examination of your dental health.
Your dentist knows what signs and symptoms to look for and will be able to detect any possible signs of dental decay, oral cancer, gum disease or another health issue.
You may look inside your mouth in the mirror and see pearly white teeth, but you can never have as thorough a look as the dentist, especially between and on the backside of your teeth.
The next question is, what’s happening below your gum line? You do not know, because you cannot see, but your dentist can use x-rays to take a look.
Your dentist will also professionally clean your teeth, which is always lovely!
How often should a dentist x-ray teeth?
The frequency of dental x-rays depends on each patient’s oral health.
However, generally, patients with a healthy mouth should receive dental x-rays every year or two.
For patients with certain ongoing oral health issues, they are recommended to receive dental x-rays every six months.
What happens during a regular dental appointment?
Dental check-ups usually include two parts; the check-up and the clean.
Dental examination:
During the dental examination, your dentist will perform an overall oral health examination of your teeth, gums, tongue and other soft tissue inside your mouth.
The dentist will be searching for signs of cavities, gum disease, tooth erosion, tooth decay, oral cancer and other issues.
Many dentists will perform an oral cancer screening. This includes examining your facial symmetry, soft tissues inside your mouth and feeling your lymph nodes on your neck, to check for swelling or pain – symptoms of oral cancer.
You may also have oral x-rays taken so that the dentist can have a look for cavities, below your gum line and for overall issues that are showing no visible signs.
Dental clean:
Once the dental examination is completed, your dentist will usually clean and polish your teeth. You will also receive a fluoride mouthwash that will help remineralise your enamel.
